A member of WG21 this week delivered a briefing which indicated that 3 years of effort from many is now close to reaching the significant milestone of -2 ratification (a single round of voting remaining). What's more, as mentioned in the article, the content is being treated as a defacto standard by some vendors as they advance efforts to comply and thereby support their customers SAM programmes in years to come.

This is a terrific article. Software tagging has the potential to bring about a monumental leap forward for software management. In the meantime, until software tagging becomes not only a reality, but also universal among both software publishers and end-user software estates, software identification will remain a complex task.

As it stands today, the primary options for identifying installed software are registry analysis, file header analysis, or using a software identification database.

For anyone interested, we recently published a paper explaining the various methodologies for identifying software installed across corporate networks. (Our own software inventory technology relies on a software identification database that utilizes a combination of file information and registry entries.)
