Practical ITAM, the book

I’m very pleased to announce that Practical ITAM, is now available on Amazon.

The book is an accompaniment to the 12 Box training course and is designed to help ITAM Review readers get started and make a difference in the field of ITAM.

“Read this book and you’ll understand what your top priorities are, what should be done first, and how a valuable and lasting ITAM practice can be built for your company. The subject is broken down into 12 manageable chunks, which allow you to identify where your strengths and weaknesses lie—and real-life examples and practical strategies show you how to make a real impact.”

It was important for us to make the book as accessible as possible for our global audience. So that absolutely anybody could begin to learn about ITAM – so we’re pleased to say it’s available from $25 on Amazon, shipping globally.

The book originally started life as “SAM, the first 90 days” – thanks to everyone that has contributed in its evolution since then, four years ago!

Below is the foreword by David Bicket.

Practical ITAM

Practical ITAM – the book

Foreword – Practical ITAM

“IT asset management (ITAM) is a young profession. Physical asset management as a profession has been around for much longer—it has a large number of national and international associations and an extensive training, qualification, and certification infrastructure. ITAM still has a way to go. It was born out of necessity only as IT developed. It is the discipline which tries to bring an improved measure of order and control to the fastest-growing, most-innovative, and most-disruptive area of our lives, both work and personal.

ITAM is an exciting discipline, in part because of its many challenges at both the executive level (where value must be delivered to the organisation) and at the pit face (where attention to detail is needed). Training people to meet these challenges is in itself a challenge.

David Bicket, Godfather of SAM

I come from the old school where people read books, manuals, and contracts cover to cover and then learned on the job—too often through making mistakes. Mistakes are great teachers, but not friendly ones.

This book will help bring those new to the profession up to speed in a way that fits the hectic pace of life today. Its 12 modules are manageable in size, and introduce people to most of the issues they will face in real life. These modules are supported by videos (excellent!), an organisational maturity assessment, a personal certification exam, and the ITAM Review online community. The ITAM Review website is another resource to augment the course.

This course is also a good basis from which to start working towards achieving ISO ITAM, integrated with ISO information security management and ISO service management. Being tightly integrated within the rest of IT is one of our profession’s major objectives.”
