Summary

Ivanti’s ITAM capabilities have their origin in products from LANDESK & Concorde Solutions. The full solution comprises Asset Manager, License Optimizer for Clients, and License Optimizer for Servers. These form one of the five pillars of Ivanti’s approach to Unified IT Management. Subscribers to Ivanti’s ITAM pillar also benefit from components shared with other capabilities including Ivanti Cloud for analytics and insights, Xtraction for Reporting & BI, and Automation via products acquired from RES including Workspace Manager. Also available is a standalone module for SAP – License Optimizer for SAP. This review is focused on the Asset Management pillar in conjunction with the shared services layers.

Pros

  • Excellent customer feedback
  • Platform approach to IT Management, with shared components enabling integration between pillars
  • Available as a multi-tenant subscription-based cloud-hosted solution
  • Flexible licensing including no penalties for usage up to 120% of licensed capacity
  • Ability to flexibly add capabilities by adding pillars to your license agreement
  • Licensed per user, not per asset
  • Managed Services & Consultancy direct from Ivanti

Cons

  • Full capabilities only available to organisations with 1000+ seats (SMB license includes limited ITAM functionality)
  • Limited ability to manage public cloud consumption & SaaS
  • No specialist coverage of IBM & Oracle licensing
  • Some overlap between products can lead to duplication – for example both Asset Manager & License Optimiser have discovery capabilities
  • Ivanti Cloud required to get full benefit of solution; may not suit some organisations
  • Solution would benefit from tighter integration

Not recognised any significant as yet, although the analytics reports UI could be improved but I believe this is one the road map and to be released soon

Feature requests:

Contract management capability ( track obligations/ miles stones beyond contract end)Method to create top down view of what software entitlement has support associated but more importantly what support level I have, this is particularly key with the ITSM integration as it will support incident management.

Strengths

Too many things to say in this small space, but let me pick some highlights.  Finally, finally, finally, a DSL with built in algorithms to manage rights for upgrade / downgrade / cross grade / capacity / sub capacity / suite, etc. This is the least managed part of SAM which can cause the most compliance risk.  I no longer have to manually manage compliance requirements outside of my compliance tool.  SAM experts normally have to fully understand and analyze intellectual property rights to accurately to perform software related compliance tasks.  Otherwise businesses risk over spending and under/over licensing.  I have waited many years for someone to listen and create a product from a SAM perspective.  They are flexible, personable and their team doesn’t just sell a product, they can talk the language.  As a CITAM, CHAMP and CSAM, I would know if they didn’t understand compliance.

Weaknesses

I would recommend the cloud version to others for more seamless updates, etc.  With Concorde’s support team the delay is only a technical limitation of an on-premise solution and not a support issue.  If they also managed HW in their DSL, we wouldn’t need another tool for a single source, industry standard catalog.

Feature requests:

I would include professional services for a minimum of one Publisher (Vendor) to speed up training for your SAM folks and to serve as a live reference point.  Once organizations see the scenario modeling and ease of obtaining license position, they will be so excited they will push for more demos and additional reconciliations from your SAM team long before they have an opportunity to fully implement or learn the product !!!!

Strengths

We have an on-premise version because of the company’s security and still have had a very positive experience using the tool. The tool is so far ahead of it competitors and the company been very open to suggestion to improve the product. The staff is very knowledgeable and we stood up the tool in a day.

Weaknesses

The product can be difficult for beginners but the on-line help, support and training has helped to bridge the gap.

Feature requests:

Information on difference licensing types and agreement and best sites to get licensing information of products. The tool is very flexible  but with flexibility you add addition complexity. if the tool had a standard menu where the user can configure the tool cased on their knowledge, this is what’s required, it may help it make it easier for beginners.

Strengths

This tool has been excellent for helping us with our IBM Sub capacity licensing. It has a great out of the box DSL which has meant we’ve been able to populate quickly and easily without having to create too many of our own software entries. However, the tool is flexible enough to allow you to do this. So would work well across all industry sectors in my opinion.

Weaknesses

I would like to see behind the scenes of the DSL, at the moment you can’t interrogate this to ensure you are matching against the correct file.

Feature requests:

To be able to see the .exe or .dll file properties would make it perfect.

Analyst Review - AJ Witt, July 2020

About Ivanti

Ivanti were formed in 2017 by a merger between LANDESK & HEAT Software. Both those companies were industry veterans, having been formed in the mid to late 1980s. Since the merger, Concorde Solutions has been added to the portfolio, enabling Ivanti to add SAM optimisation capabilities to Asset Management.

Ivanti provide Unified IT Solutions including Endpoint Security, Unified Endpoint Management, Service Management, and Identify Management in addition to ITAM. They compete with organisations such as Cherwell, ServiceNow, & BMC to provide organisations with a platform for managing their IT.

Product History

Key Features

Ivanti’s ITAM products reflect their heritage as separate products.

Asset Manager (based on LANDESK) provides full lifecycle asset management capabilities including discovery, inventory, and product catalogues. Integrations are available for other Ivanti products including Endpoint Manager, Service Management and CMDB, and Data Centre Discovery. Strong Hardware Asset Management (HAM) capabilities include barcoding for physical assets and a product catalogue for management of stock levels. A mobile application is available for physical inventory. Asset Manager also includes Cost and Vendor Management capabilities. In keeping with other Ivanti products Asset Manager is delivered cloud-first via multi-tenant hosting but may also be installed on-premises.

License Optimiser is based on products formerly built by Concorde Solutions. It is a cloud-only solution. As the name suggests, the purpose of this product is to analyse ITAM data and provide opportunities to optimise software license consumption. Reflecting its separate origin, License Optimiser has its own Discovery Engine but also integrates with the rest of the Ivanti portfolio. Key capabilities include automated license reclamation, scenario modelling, and generation of Effective License Position (ELP) for major vendors. Whilst License Optimiser is split into two products – Client and Server – which reflect its history as a Concorde product – there is little difference for Ivanti ITAM enterprise customers as both modules are included in the ITAM pillar.

In 2019 Ivanti released License Optimiser for SAP as a standalone module. In keeping with other SAP solutions, License Optimiser for SAP is implemented outside SAP. It provides optimisation based on usage of specific SAP authorisations, automated matching of users across SAP systems to reduce duplication, and also provides insight into managing Indirect Access.

Shared Services

All Ivanti license agreements include several shared components. These include Ivanti Cloud, Automation, & Xtraction.

Ivanti Cloud is a key enabling technology for the Ivanti platform. This cloud-hosted layer provides integration between the various Ivanti product pillars and can also be configured to ingest data from 3rd party solutions such as SCCM or Active Directory. By doing so it enables users to derive real-time insights and action and breaks down silos between IT functions. It also extends automation capabilities across the product tiers. Using a cloud layer to enhance and integrate existing products is a key theme that we’re seeing from the tools market and it’s one that makes a lot of sense. It provides a unified view of your data in a consistent presentation layer and supports the move upwards in seniority we’re seeing IT Asset Managers take.

Automation is available in both standard and enterprise form, depending on the modules purchased. In enterprise form with Identity Director deployed this provides automation services across all Ivanti products. For standalone ITAM customers or those not deploying Identity Director, Automation Standard still provides enhanced capabilities in comparison to any automation capabilities already within the product.

Xtraction Enterprise licenses are included with all Ivanti product pillar purchases. Xtraction Enterprise is the Reporting & Dashboarding layer. By providing this as a platform service Ivanti customers are given a consistent, centralised reporting function for all modules.

Differentiators

The key differentiator for Ivanti’s solution is that it provides a unified, platform approach to IT Management, including ITAM. In some ways, necessity has been the mother of invention as Ivanti has needed to integrate products from multiple acquisitions.

Key to effective IT Management is automation and actionability and Ivanti also provide this.

The modular approach offered will suit some organisations seeking to focus on a specific area and whilst ITAM may not be the first module acquired – Service Management often is – there is the opportunity to build out an IT Management platform component by component. As usage of the platform grows, synergies will appear and silos will break down.

Separation of platform services such as Automation and Reporting enable Ivanti to focus on core product functionality within each pillar whilst providing a consistent approach to acting upon outputs from tools in those pillars.

Summary

The Ivanti Unified IT platform provides large organisations with a suite of capabilities to effectively manage their estates. Since 2018 considerable progress has been made in integrating various solutions originating from mergers and acquisitions.

Ivanti’s solution for ITAM provides much of the functionality required by large organisations to effectively manage assets with only vendor-specific capabilities such as IBM sub-capacity missing, along with coverage of the emerging SaaS Management use case. The roadmap looks strong and Ivanti are clearly committed to investing in the ITAM platform, as evidenced by the delivery of the SAP module in 2019.

As expected of an enterprise-targeted solution, Ivanti provide managed services and consultancy for their tooling and the cloud-first hosting option builds on this to reduce the time to value of the platform. Whilst ITAM may not be the reason to choose Ivanti over a standalone solution if your organisation already uses some Ivanti products, their ITAM suite will be a worthwhile addition to your environment. That’s not to say their ITAM modules can’t stand on their own two feet – all are highly capable and based on mature technology. For example, when we first looked at License Optimiser we said:

“We believe that Concorde are leading the ITAM market with their scenario modelling & what-if analysis”.

We also stated that integration with ITSM tools such as LANDESK and the provision of SAP license management would be necessary for some customers, and those are now available in the integrated Ivanti platform.

Overall, Ivanti’s IT Asset Management capabilities provide coverage of the use cases currently most important to large organisations. The greatest benefit will be derived when they’re deployed with other Ivanti modules and we look forward to seeing further enhancements around emerging use cases such as Infrastructure-as-a-Service (IaaS) and SaaS Management.
