Ahead of Wisdom North America 2022 next week, I sat down with Piyush Patel, Advisory Solution Consultant at ServiceNow, to discuss the art of bringing together all aspects of Technology Asset Management ahead of his upcoming keynote on the topic. An engineer by background, Piyush transitioned into ITAM via a SAM practitioner role during his time at Dell. He has since held numerous ITAM including Snow, and now ServiceNow.

Technology Asset Management

During his session, Piyush will demonstrate how ServiceNow ITAM solutions interact with other areas of the business and across the ServiceNow Platform. This includes Hardware Asset Management, Software Management, and Cloud Insights, which helps to manage cloud resource spend.

“Most customers have a fairly good understanding that asset management is much more than SAM,” remarked Piyush. “It’s now expanded into HAM, IoT, cloud services etc. Managing these assets across the enterprise is now overwhelming.

“The industry is evolving. Your role as an IT asset manager has also evolved to cover all these assets – if it hasn’t yet, your role will change, and you need to be ready. While there are challenges to this, there are opportunities too. You need a solution that offers the full capability to track these assets within a single platform, otherwise you’re doing silo point solutions which don/t meet your full needs of managing assets from procurement through to retirement.”

For Piyush, the evolved ITAM role must cover three components to be successful; hardware, software and cloud. “Hardware Asset Management is the starting point of a good ITAM practice. You need your hardware inventory before you can determine which software resides on it.” For the software side, Piyush recommends starting with the SaaS components first because you can plug directly into your platforms to extract the licensing data. Getting a handle on licences takes time, so starting with SaaS can lead to some quick wins. Lastly, cloud insights should focus on the various means of measuring/licensing resource consumption (e.g. by CPU, memory, data centre real estate etc.) to ensure optimum efficiency of your estate.

To learn more about Piyush’s views on what the evolved ITAM role looks like, and how ServiceNow brings together the three components of hardware, software and cloud, be sure to check out his session on day one of the event. Bringing together all aspects of technology asset management will kick off at 11.55 EDT / 15:55 GMT on Tuesday, March 22nd.
