Elevator pitch

Matrix42 provide SAM functionality as part of their Unified Workspace Management platform. This platform provides, alongside SAM, ITSM, UEM, and Endpoint Security capabilities.

Strengths

  • Modular approach to Unified IT Management
  • Purchase Modules as required
  • Extendable with optional modules such as Oracle License Management
  • One of the first tools to integrate ITSM & SAM
  • Good connectivity to other toolsets
  • No-code/Low-code customisations
  • Very strong customer retention & renewals
  • Cost Allocation
  • Self-service app store

Weaknesses

  • Datacenter management module a chargeable extra
  • Not well-known outside core markets of DACH & North-Western Europe
  • SAM is a module, not a core product
  • No Cloud Consumption (IaaS) management
  • UI is data-heavy, dashboarding & reporting could be improved

Matrix42 have included Software Asset Management in their product offering for over ten years. They claim to take an holistic approach to SAM and this is borne out by the modular approach they take with their product. The SAM module works in concert with optional modules for Service Management (ITSM), Unified Endpoint Management (UEM), and Endpoint Security Management.

The aim of this platform is to ensure technology is managed centrally, whether it is central IT or deployed as "shadow" IT at the department level. The four modules combine together to help IT organisations manage Cost, Security, Automation, and Process deliverables.

Commercials, Availability & Coverage

Matrix42's SAM Solution is available as a perpetual license or via subscription. They are growing their customer base by 5-10% per year and have over 5000 customers. They are strongly represented in DACH plus Italy but also growing organically internationally from DACH-owned organisations such as Puma & Zeiss. Customer renewal rate is very high - in the high 90s percentage wise.

Integrations

In addition to its native capabilities, Matrix42 SAM is able to integrate with industry-standard discovery, inventory, and EMM solutions such as SCCM, KACE, Ivanti, and ServiceNow.

SAM functionality

In addition to the expected SAM solution deliverables of discovery, inventory, and entitlement management Matrix42 SAM also delivers the following:

  • Integration with Identity & Access Management for SaaS Management
  • Service Catalog functionality usually found in an ITSM solution, including automated CMDB
  • Contract Management including renewals management and integration with purchasing and financial accounting
  • Automation & Customisation through SolutionBuilder & Workflows - more on this below

SolutionBuilder & Workflows

This functionality is a key strength of the product, enabled by its integration with other solutions in the portfolio. SolutionBuilder & Workflows provide the ability to create, adapt, and configure automated processes. The stated aim of this component is to enable non-technical users to customise the solution to meet their particular business processes and it largely achieves this LowCode/NoCode approach. Matrix42 claim that such customisations are retained when new versions of the platform are deployed, a potentially significant differentiator.

Cost Allocation

A core use case for Matrix42 SAM is cost allocation & cross-charging. This requirement is woven throughout the module and makes it particularly suitable for organisations with decentralised IT budgets and provisioning.

Software Recognition

Software recognition remains a key differentiator between SAM solutions because typically each vendor is building their own recognition engine, rules, and databases. Matrix42's License Intelligence Service (LIS) is no different. It is available in three tiers - Basic, Standard, and Premium - and claims to identify almost 2 million software fingerprints to discover SKUs and License Metrics.

Conclusion

As a standalone module, Matrix42 SAM delivers a strong set of commonly-required SAM capabilities. However, it will really come into its own if an organisation takes one or more of its companion modules as the close integration will deliver considerable synergies. SAM and ITAM tools being delivered as part of a wider IT Management Suite or Platform is a current market trend, and one I expect to continue over the medium term. Matrix42 have a strong roadmap for the SAM module and overall it deserves to be better known outside its core DACH market.
